VELDZE VILLAGE
NRJA awarded 3rd place in the competition for Building A

PROBLEM AND PROPOSED SOLUTION

To date, there has been no residential development within the VELDZE Creative Factory quarter.
By introducing residential buildings, the quarter will become a multifunctional, contemporary environment for living, working, and recreation.

As part of the architectural competition, a proposal is being developed for the construction of two new multi-storey residential buildings together with the landscaping of the adjacent territory, while also considering the broader integration of the quarter within the urban fabric.

NON-STANDARD URBAN SITUATION

The non-standard urban planning situation, in which the prescribed building line along Matīsa Street deviates significantly from the established street frontage, defines the uniqueness of the VELDZE quarter within the context of the city’s traditional urban structure.

ARCHITECTURAL CONCEPT

The two new residential buildings are conceived as a visually unified ensemble that frames the historic development along Matīsa Street, bringing it into the foreground.

In terms of form, the otherwise simple building volumes are distinguished by a subtle curvature. Without increasing construction complexity or cost, this gesture gives the development a unique character and discreet dynamism, while visually emphasising the historic street frontage of Matīsa Street and inviting passers-by to move deeper into the inner courtyard of the block.

The interpretation of the façade rhythm of historic industrial architecture in the new development follows the principles of clear, contextually appropriate architecture.

Thanks to the slight curvature of the volumes, each apartment is given its own spatial identity and differentiated views through the windows.

Community interaction is encouraged through shared greenhouses and a unified landscape design for the entire quarter.
